How to Keep Your House Cool Without AC: 8 Strategies for Long Island Summers

When your AC is out for repairs — or you just want to reduce your electric bill — these strategies make a real difference.

Long Island summers are hot and humid, and air conditioning is the most effective way to stay comfortable. But there are times when you need to manage without it: waiting for a repair, trying to cut costs, or dealing with a power outage. These strategies work best when combined.

1. Block Heat Before It Enters

The most effective thing you can do is prevent solar heat from entering your home in the first place. Close blinds and curtains on south- and west-facing windows between 10 AM and 4 PM — the peak sun hours. Blackout curtains or reflective window film provide the most benefit. A room with closed blinds can be 10–15°F cooler than one with open windows in direct sun.

2. Use Fans Strategically

Fans do not cool air — they cool people by creating a wind-chill effect. A ceiling fan set to counterclockwise (summer mode) makes a room feel 4°F cooler. Box fans in windows can create cross-ventilation: place one blowing in on the shaded side of the house and one blowing out on the sunny side to pull cooler air through.

3. Open Windows at Night

On Long Island, summer nights often cool down to the low-to-mid 70s. If outdoor temperature drops below indoor temperature, open windows to flush out the day's heat. Close them again in the morning before outdoor temperatures rise. This "night flushing" strategy can significantly reduce how hot your home gets during the day.

4. Avoid Heat-Generating Appliances During the Day

Your oven, clothes dryer, and dishwasher generate significant heat. Run them in the early morning or after 9 PM. Use the microwave or outdoor grill instead of the oven. Air-dry dishes instead of using the heated dry cycle.

5. Use Exhaust Fans

Kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans pull hot, humid air out of your home. Run them during and after cooking and showering. On cooler evenings, a whole-house fan (if you have one) can exhaust hot air from the entire house in minutes.

6. Stay Low

Heat rises. The lowest floor of your home is always the coolest. If you have a finished basement, it can be 10–15°F cooler than upper floors on a hot day. Spend the hottest part of the afternoon on the ground floor or basement.

7. Use a Portable or Window AC Unit for One Room

If your central AC is down, a portable or window unit in the bedroom allows you to sleep comfortably even if the rest of the house is warm. This is a practical short-term solution while waiting for central AC repairs.

8. Stay Hydrated and Use Cool Water

Your body's cooling system is evaporation. Staying well hydrated, using a spray bottle with cool water, and taking cool showers all help your body manage heat more effectively.

When You Need Your AC Fixed Fast

These strategies help in a pinch, but nothing replaces a properly functioning air conditioning system during a Long Island summer. A1 Heating & Air Conditioning provides same-day AC repair throughout Long Island. Call 631-331-2102 or schedule service online.
